Villa by the sea in Monopoli – The surrounding area

The seashore, more than13 kilometers long, includes white beaches and more secluded creeks. Creeks can be reached by foot or by boat. Water is transparent and irresistible. Cliffs are sweet and harmonious, full or ravines, gorges and banks. Tens of creeks are suitable for anchorage though some of them are particularly precious like “ Porto Bianco”, “Porto Rosso” “Porto Paradiso”, “Porto Camicia”, “Porto Marzano” and the wonderful “Cala Verde” where you can enjoy magic lunar glints. In the south of Monopoli, the coast is made up of fine, soft and golden sand. There are stretches of free beach and several bathing establishments. They are organized and equipped with stands, bar, and restaurants. They feature cabins, beach-umbrellas, sun-beds and pedal rental. Facilities include also sports areas like basketball, beach volley, and soccer pitches, bowls, swimming, motor- boating, windsurfing and entertainment for children. “Capitolo” is the nightlife center of Monopoli and surrounding towns. Many clubs and discos (even on the beach) sprung lately. They are constantly crowded but they get full during weekend nights especially. On the seaside, there are a lot of typical restaurants and bakeries where you can try the friselle, focaccia, Calzone with onion and my very favorite …panzerotti a pizza dough envelope with choice filling and deep fried.

Monopoli based on old seafaring traditions roots has really old origins. The first settlement was a huts village known also by Mycenean sailors and founded during the Middle Bronze.

Monopoli’ port dominated by the imposing Aragonese castle is divided into a northern part of the most modern, recently converted to commercial traffic and tourism and a more ancient and picturesque southern part, where the fishing boats are moored.

Monopoli has many church-caves with fine frescoes from the Byzantine school within the urban area; the church of Madonna del Soccorso, Santa Maria Amalfitana and San Leonardo on request can be visited.

Walking around the small streets in the historical center of Monopoli in order to discover churches now closed to worship, could be a different and interesting tour as well.

At Christmas time, fortunately, many of these open their doors for cultural events or Nativity Cribs.
