Valle d’ Itria

Valle d’itra is situated in the center of the Puglia reagion and stretches from Putignano in the north, Ostuni in the south and Martina Franca to the west.

The valley strategic location is at easy access to the Adriatic and the Ionian seas and to the picaresque towns which includes Ceglie Messapica, Cisternno, Locorotondo, Ostuni, Martina Franca and the magnificent Alberobello; UNESCO World Heritage town.

The gentle rolling countryside of the Itria Valley is scattered with endless olive groves, vineyards and set on a fertile plain in the center of the Puglia region. This astonishing and ancient scenery, which reminded me of scenes form biblical movies, is dotted with the peculiar cone roofs and cylindrical constructions, which are typical and unique from this area of Italy.

The Trulli constructions were developed in such a way that these could be easily deconstructed when needed; in fact no bonding material was used at the time and its structure was simply supported by rudimentary and extremely efficient application of Newtown three laws.

The Valle d’Itria or Itra’s Valley is not a typical valley, in fact is a Karstic depression that stretches from Cisternino, Locorotondo, and Martina Franca. This is a geological phenomenon that ultimately created the fascinating caves of Castellana Grotte. These cave runs approximately for 3km under the Valle d’ Itria’s northeastern edge.

Castellana Grotte a tourist attraction.

The land of olive trees and the enchanted Castellana Grotte, called so since the 1950’s in tribute to the wonderful underground world discovered by Prof. Franco Anelli in 1938.

The cave that communicates with the outside through the beautiful natural skylight, stretches for a kilometer and a half between caves and corridors from the mythological and fantastic names, to the wonderful white cave among the most beautiful caves in the world.

Castellana is also home to “Viedulivi”, the Management Committee of extra virgin olive oil. For the safeguarding and promotion of the local extra virgin olive oil and olives from the gnarled trunks that for centuries witnessed the hardships of peasant people that oil was a reason for existence.
